Why Katonte

Why Katonte

“Katonte” is a village in north central Zambia close to the border with the DRC (between the towns of Ndola and Kapiri Mposhi). In the local language the word means a homely gathering.

Katonte Healthcare Programme was set up in 2014 by Simon’s late wife, and it established accommodation allowing posting of staff to the government health clinic in Katonte village, which as a result could begin operating.

This NGO is currently dormant, though the clinic is still operating under government financing, but it has long been the aim to resurrect it in a new form. The plan has been to harness capability in political economy driven analysis and delivery to accumulate profits from the development business for re-investment in local service delivery and livelihoods development.

This is one of Katonte Development Perspectives’ key “perspectives on development”. We do not believe that we can be real development promoters if we do not also promote development through our own work. This we aim to do by using our own funds and connections to mobilise capital investment for local business growth.

The name “Katonte” is intended to preserve this connection in our own minds, and to communicate this theme in our own mission. To this end KDP will also engage in “open book accounting”, demonstrating how our profits are distributed and invested in local growth.

Creating Stories

Both through our consultancy business, and through the business of social enterprise, KDP expects to encounter, and contribute to, positive development stories, promoting demand-driven development and politically sensitive ways of working.
